When her husband's grown son returns from college for a stay, his stepmother does not greet him with a hug and a home-cooked dinner. She writes rules. On paper they look like the kind of thing any household might post, but the point of House Rules is that every line is a move in a private game she is playing with him. Complicating things, he has not come alone: his girlfriend is staying in the house too, which turns every hallway encounter into a calculated risk.

The stepson and the stepmother are both adults, and the series treats the step-family storyline as a power play rather than a family drama. She sets the terms, he has to decide how closely to follow them, and the girlfriend is the clock ticking in the background.
